ANSEP Yup’ik Video for 2020 Celebration

The Challenge

Our team planned to film in multiple Alaska Native villages, but weather made initial plans impossible. T&C had to pivot quickly to capture all interviews and b-roll in Bethel.

The Approach

The T&C team headed to Bethel, pivoted when weather made travel to select Alaska Native villages impossible, filmed and edited the piece. We identified students and teachers for interviews, filmed and edited the video. We worked closely with elders and educators who speak Yup’ik to incorporate the language into the video.

Powerful

Feedback from attendees at Celebration was unanimously positive. Everyone pointed out the power of having an elder and parent speaking in Yup’ik about the importance of education for the children in their village.

After filming interviews in Bethel, the team returned to Anchorage to edit video footage in a language we do not speak. We worked with the client on translations and included English subtitles for the video. The result was a mix of Yup’ik and English interviews that showed how valuable ANSEP is to elders in the community, parents, program graduates and current students.
